What Is This? (The Mission)

TerribleCat Music is a new kind of music platform — built by a working musician (hi, I'm Paul) to reclaim new and original music from the systems that have stripped it of control and visibility.

New and original music still holds incredible value — that's exactly why major labels buy out any independent label that starts gaining real momentum. But too often, once they take over, the catalog disappears, the competition fades, and the money flows back to the same small group of gatekeepers. The result? Less space for real, human-made music to thrive.

I've spent the last year designing and building this app from scratch because I couldn't shake one simple idea: What if we stopped handing over music's future to tech companies and took it back for ourselves? What if there was a place where new and original music could grow on its own terms — without algorithms, corporate middlemen, or the pressure to "go viral"?

This is that place. TerribleCat is a streaming app and independent label built for one reason: to create a real ecosystem for real music. Where human beings get paid to make albums, and listeners get something better than the same old catalog spit out by a recommendation engine.

The more people who sign up and listen, the sooner we get advertisers.
The sooner we get advertisers, the sooner I start paying people real $$ for albums.
The more original albums we have, the more regular listeners will join the paid tier.
The more people who join the paid tier, the more I'll be able to pay artists.

Just some simple math: Spotify today has about 678 million monthly users, with 268 million of them paying around $11.99/month. That adds up to over $3 billion a month in gross subscription revenue flowing through the system.

We're talking about $1.4 billion to $3 billion a month. Even a fraction of that subscriber base would be enough to build something real. We don't need everyone — just a slice of the people out there who want new music made by human beings.

This isn't just another streaming app. It's a music platform built by musicians, for musicians — where artists get paid upfront, releases are exclusive, and no corporate middlemen touch the art.

And here's what you get as a listener: brand new music that hasn't been focus-grouped, algorithm-optimized, or watered down by some corporate committee. Real artists making real music without anyone telling them to "make it more like that song that went viral." No AI-generated hooks, no manufactured emotions, no streaming-platform-friendly 30-second intros designed to game the algorithm. Just pure, unfiltered creativity from human beings who have something to say.

Who knows — maybe we'll even get some music the world has never heard before again. Music that pushes boundaries, tells stories that matter, and reminds us why we fell in love with music in the first place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you a label or a streaming app?
We're both. TerribleCat Music is a platform and label that exclusively features original and new music made by real people.
How do artists get paid?
Artists will always receive direct payment for their albums upfront. Streaming pays nothing and means nothing. Every artist gets $1 a month from each user that subscribes because of them.
Where does my subscription money go?
Directly to artists, platform development, music production, and music and artist promotion. No corporate middlemen, no AI development, no executive stock buybacks.
What genres of music will I find?
We want all types of music on TerribleCat because we love all types of music. But in the beginning, it will mostly be artists I know and work with in the NYC music scene.
How is this different from other streaming services?
The model went from CDs to Streaming Apps as the method for collecting money for music. But along the way the major labels got extremely lazy, short-sighted, risk averse, and cornered the market. Musicians stopped getting paid and we stopped getting new, interesting, cool, amazing, genre-bending music. And culture has suffered. We're essentially going back to the old model of it's the label's job to get the music out there and the artist's job to create the best music they can. But we're just using a streaming app.
What makes an artist 'real' vs 'AI'?
Real = human-made. AI = an aggregate of human work. If a human wants to use AI as a tool to aid in their composition, that's great. But we hope to allow artists to get paid well enough through us that they release quality over quantity.
Will you have mainstream/popular artists?
If they would like to be on TerribleCat, we'd love to talk to them!
Can I create playlists?
We are in the extreme Beta phase. Paul Jones, full-time professional NYC saxophonist, created and built this app/label. (Hi!) As we get more funds the app will get more features. So stay tuned, share, and keep listening!
Do you have music recommendations?
Right now on the main home page, the latest recording TerribleCat has produced will always be featured. As the catalog grows we are going to fill out our Browse Section and Radio Section. Browse will be more mood, keyword, and algorithmic recommendations. Radio will start off as AI radio stations of our catalog. But in time, I'd love to have properly curated radio stations run by knowledgeable people picking actual music for the station. Remember, Spotify makes at least 1.5 billion dollars a month. Nearly 70% of that goes towards music licensing. We're creating all new music. If we can get even a fraction of that, I don't see why we can't create a few in-app radio stations run by proper human beings!
Can I share music with friends?
You will be able to share. Sharing and spreading the word is key to our success. There are traditional share buttons in the app.
